Common Questions
Will R&M products work on my trailer?
Yes. R&M products work on commercial and recreational trailers, including:
- Utility
- RV
- Box
- Horse
- Cargo
- Boat
- ATV / Dirt Bike
- Car
- Flatbed
If you’re unsure due to a unique tongue layout, send us photos and we’ll take a look.
How do I choose between OnTop and OnSide?
- OnTop keeps the jack centered and moves it straight back. This is ideal for RVs and livestock trailers where balance and comfort inside the trailer matter.
- OnSide moves the jack out of the way entirely and can be mounted facing in or out. Two OnSides can also be used together as a stabilizing system.
Can I fully open my tailgate while hitched?
Yes. All Jack Back products are designed to eliminate tailgate-hits-jack damage and allow full rear access while the trailer remains hitched.
Are stabilizers the same as levelers?
- OnSide jacks stabilize side-to-side movement
- They can level front-to-back
- They cannot level a trailer side-to-side on their own
Attempting to lift a rear corner by raising a front corner can damage the trailer frame.
Troubleshooting & Real-World Issues
My tailgate still doesn’t open all the way
Check:
- Jack orientation (you have multiple mounting angles)
- Setback distance (OnTop Plus or Maxi may be needed)
- Tongue accessories blocking movement
The jack feels stiff or tight
This is normal with heavy tongue weight.
- Ensure mounting bolts are torqued evenly
- Confirm jack rating exceeds tongue weight
- Check that the jack is plumb and not binding
Yes. The Battery Platform 1408 is designed specifically for this.
Important battery rules:
- Use identical batteries (same brand, age, capacity)
- Fully charge both batteries before installation
- Use equal-length cables for positive and negative connections
- Use correct gauge cable (bigger is better)
Can I add propane tanks?
Yes. Side Arms support standard:
- 5 gallon (20 lb)
- 7½ gallon (30 lb)
10 gallon tanks are not supported due to weight and handling concerns.
